This earthenware fish is hand-constructed using a soft slab building method. Knotted netting that I strategically place and press into the wet clay leaves behind the sophisticated scale-like texture you see here. My large rambunctious pet goldfish, Taquito, who I love very much, is the inspiration behind this cute yet practical piece.
This dimensional dish is built atop two short feet on the underside, keeping it raised just slightly above a tabletop for added depth. The unusual colors are achieved with an experimental glazing technique using multiple layers of contrasting glazes. The hand-painted eye gives each piece personality. The bottom is signed and dated. Makes a great spoon rest, or is lovely on its own as a decoration!
Handmade by local South Philadelphia artist, Mary Schneider. Each piece is one of a kind so please allow for variations.
